Fine Line Yoga Therapy specializes in yoga therapy for scoliosis and back care.

Nancy works with many back conditions, as well as teaching students with a healthy spine how to keep their spine in good condition. Classes and workshops focus on realigning the spine within all yoga poses, balancing strength and flexibility, correcting postural habits and patterns, and empowering students to care for themselves through home practice.

Back care classes address conditions such as:

  • Scoliosis

  • Sciatica

  • Herniated disc

  • Stenosis

  • Piriformis Syndrome

  • SI joint problems

  • Spondylolisthesis

  • Kyphosis/Lordosis

  • Spinal Fusions

  • General pain in the upper back, lower back, neck, hips, shoulders

  • Postural problems

Here’s how yoga therapy works to address these issues:

Alignment of Your Posture

Learn how to find your plumb line, straighten your curves and re-align your joints appropriately for your body and your curves. Standing, back bending, forward bending, twists, inversions, and restorative poses help the body align in all positions. Counter pose the curvature by adjusting yoga poses with props and specific cues for your pattern to re-align your spine.

You will learn to appropriately twist and de-rotate the spine to counter scoliosis rotation and curvature of the spine.

Elongation of the Spine

Learn how to make your spine taller when standing and sitting, and longer when laying down. Elongation of the spine helps to reduce curvature. When you turn upside down in an inversion, you will learn how to use gravity to lengthen your spine without effort and release tension in muscles, while increasing space between vertebrae.

The first step is to learn about your curves and how they affect your body, mind, and breath. Fine Line Yoga therapy teaches you to become aware of your body from your toes to the crown of your head. The Spine Assessment is just the beginning of this process; As atrophied muscles begin to recover, you will find new ways to activate these muscles and gain feedback.

Learn to build strength where there is weakness, specifically in the feet, legs, abdominals, spinal muscles, diaphragm, and throughout the body. Balance of strength between the two sides of the body leads to reduction of the curvature. Strong balanced muscles can help move and support the bones.

You will learn to breathe softly, slowly, deeply and fully in and out through the nose and breathe deeply into the concave, collapsed area of the body, releasing tightness and softening pain. Breathing practices, pranayama, help to calm the nervous system, and to bring more awareness into the imbalances in the ribcage and diaphragm.

Correction Through Repetition

You will learn through repetition how to break the conditioned curvy habits that scoliosis has formed in your body. Practicing yoga poses with specific cueing for your curve pattern or back issue will build new habits, counterpose imbalances, and introduce new practices of proper alignment and balance.

Empowerment Through Self Care

Take your back care into your own hands: With Nancy’s help, you will learn to develop a home practice (or refine your existing practice) in a way that’s tailored to your needs. This empowers you to keep progression at bay, alleviate pain, correct your back issues, and gain strength and poise.

I started working with Nancy 9 years ago around the time I was told I needed total spinal fusion surgery for my scoliosis. Nancy is dedicated, knowledgeable and sensitive to each of her student’s needs. Her yoga class has been the best thing that’s happened for me and my back issue. I elected to not do the surgery and her class has helped me maintain an active lifestyle and be mainly pain free. It’s also given me a community of people who are dealing with the same issues I am. The sharing has been wonderful and I can’t say enough about how important this class is to me.
